Fielding was recruited from Franklin, Ohio, to Sidney in 1824 by its residents after the death of Dr. Pratt, the county’s first physician. Fielding had previously served in the War of 1812 and assisted Indian agent John Johnston in Piqua.

He was not only an excellent physician, but he also became one of the leading elders in the local Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Fielding founded the Masonic Lodge in Sidney in 1825 and was its first Master. He was a member of the Masons for 55 years and wrote much of Ohio Masonry’s constitution and ceremonies. The Sidney Lodge #73 was named the Temperance Lodge in his honor. He practiced and taught temperance all his life. Dr. Fielding and his wife Elizabeth Vail raised a family of 12 children. His greatest contribution was as a leader. Dr. Fielding represented Shelby County in the Ohio General Assembly for seven years and was also a State Senator. He led the effort to create the Sidney Feeder Canal.
